EXPLORATION
Career explorationstarts with you. Embarkingon a career is exciting. You have so many options for the next step after college-and if that
feels overwhelming, your Career Center staff is here to help. The place to start when choosing a career is self-exploration. When it comes to
career exploration, you never have to do it alone! Your Career Center staff can help connect you to academic advisors in your majors of
interest and provide additionalstrategies for learning more about your prospective career interests. Career discovery can happen through
opportnities inside and outside the classroom, job shadowing, and more.
CAREER ASSESSMENTS & INVENTORIES
INSIDE & OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
One way to assist you in discovering and understanding
your interests, skills, values, and personality preferences is
by taking career assessments. All of our career assessments
are research-based, and our staff are certified to help
students interpret their results.
Students can dive even deeper by enrolling in IDS 120:
Exploring Majors and Careers, a course designed to assist in
making meaningful academic and career choices. Students
participate in self-assessments, major and career
exploration, and decision-making activities throughout the
course.
Kuder Journey is an all-in-one, self-service career
exploration platform where you can complete a selfassessment, explore MSU's academic offerings, and research
salaries, industry growth, and qualifications in different
career fields.
Outside the classroom, the activities you spend time on
when you're not studying can also help you gain experience,
build your network and discover what you enjoy.
Tips for Exploring Interests
The Career Center uses the Myers Briggs Type Indicator
(MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory to help students
learn more about their interests, personality preferences,
skills, and work values. During a follow-up appointment,
your Career Resources Specialist (CRS) will discuss your
results and how they may align with career and major
interests.
